About the workshops

The following workshops take place in our studio. On request we offer externe workshops in other printmaking studios or art schools.
All workshops are appropriate for beginners as well as for professional artists.

One week workshop

"Japanese Woodblock"

The traditional technique of Japanese woodblock printmaking with water-based inks has much to offer present-day printmakers. With its excellent cutting technique, the use of water-based inks and a special tool for hand printing, the baren, it allows for a wide range of cutting and printing effects. Only natural, non-toxic materials are used, and very little space (no press) is required.
In the beginning of this workshop, a historical introduction is given to the participants with the possibility to see traditional and contemporary woodblock prints, books and catalogs off Japanese ukiyo-e-prints and contemporary prints. Later on, the workshop centers on the creation of a multicolor woodblock print: from the concept and the cutting of the wood to the printing, combined with detailed explanations about the different working steps, tools and materials. At first, the participants learn how to do the colour separation, to cut the kento registration marks and to transfer their design onto the block. Handling and maintenance of the Japanese cutting tools are taught. We inform about the attributes of the Japanese paper, its production and special meaning for the water-based woodblock print. Different papers can be compared. Variations of printing brushes and barens are introduced. The participants learn how to use these tools while printing by inking the block with water-based ink and printing paste and rubbing the paper with the baren. Special printing techniques will be explained. Every participant prints her/his own edition.
We will give information about suppliers and possibities of western substitutes for the materials used. Photographs from Japan will be shown. The participants receive written information.

Mo-Fr 10-17 h
280 € + 25 € material (solid wood, plywood, Japanese papers and inks among other things)
8 participants

One week workshop

"Colour Intaglio - Acrylic Resists and Photopolymer Film"

The subject of this workshop is to develop and print colour intaglios of several plates. For doing so, in the first part of the workshop the participants learn how to use the traditional techniques of intaglio working with acryl-based materials as hard- and/or soft ground, lift ground and aquatint (including additional experimental techniques if desired). Using the acrylic grounds allows to dispense with harmful organic solvents, asphalt varnish and dust.
In the second part of the workshop, the participants learn how to use the photosensitive photopolymer film in intaglio. This allows to transfer stencils (drawings and washes, photographs, print-outs) onto the (copper) plate with or without using acid. The participants get accustomed to the various ways of exposure and calibration of exposure units in order to work independently later on. We give information on how to build exposure units and about the different qualities of available films.
It is possible to do several black-and-white prints or about two multi-plate intaglio prints. In addition to technical aspects, aesthetical approaches can be discussed.
Beginners will be introduced to basic techniques such as soaking and tearing paper, adjusting the press, felts, mixing inks, printing. Independent working in a studio will then be possible.
The participants receive written information.

Mo-Fr 10-17 h
280 € + 25 € material (paper, copper, photopolymer film and inks among other things)
6 participants

One week workshop

"Photopolymer Film and Solarplates in Intaglio"

The use of light sensitive films and plates makes it possible to work with any image within the techniques of intaglio, if wished in combination with traditional techniques. This workshop teaches how to use materials like the photopolymer film and the solarplates. The workshop introduces exposure and development of both materials demonstrating their special advantages, including two options of using the photopolymer film (with and without etching). The participants can gain experience in calibrating perfect exposure times.
We give information of how to build exposure units. Beginners will be introduced to basic techniques of printing intaglio. Working independently in a studio will then be possible.
The participants receive written information.

Mo-Fr 10-17 h
290 € plus individual expenses of copper, photopolymer film and solarplates
6 participants

One week workshop

"Screen Printing"

Screen printing is a printmaking technique basing on the principle of the stencil. It allows many options of creative printing, also without photo exposure or big equipment.
This workshop teaches screen printing from the scratch.
After a general introduction, first small-size works are printed with a simple device, the screen-flag. Afterwards works of bigger size are printed by tearing and cutting stencils. We work with screenfiller and a resist technique. We show how to transfer images with uv-exposure and introduce several techniques of monotype screenprinting.
If wished by the participants, t-shirts can be printed on.
The participants learn how to cook a self-made screen printing base for mixing water-based inks. We give information for building up your own (simple) studio.
The participants receive written information.

Mo-Fr 10-17 h
280 € + 25 € material (paper and inks among other things)
6 participants

Workshop of eight days

"Creating an Artist Book or a Printmaking Serial
"

This workshop centers on the creation of a simple artist book or a printmaking serial in form of a portfolio. The art form of the artist book or the series allows to develop a theme over several pages or sheets in content and form as well. Technically, the participants have the chance to learn or deepen the use of a certain printmaking technique and to practize it while realizing a personal project.
The workshop starts with an introduction of the multifarious history of the artist book and a presentation of the available printmaking techniques. Basing on a first design, the participants conceive an individual book or a series while getting supervision to find the perfectly suiting printmaking technique.
Available techniques are techniques of intaglio like etching, aquatint and soft ground by the use of acrylic grounds and Japanese woodblock printing with water-based inks.
Short texts can be printed in intaglio by the use of photographic transfer with the photopolymer film or in relief printing by setting hot type by the use a simple setting device.
All working steps are explained and attended. Within the seven days, the used techniques can be thoroughly explored.
In the end of the workshop the created prints are brought into the form of a book or a portfolio. Options are here the leporello, the Japanese technique of bookbinding or forms of portfolios.
The participants receive written information. Experience within printmaking techniques is not necessary but a first design is required.

Fr 18-21 h; Sa/So 12-17h; Mo-Fr 9-17 h
380 € plus individual expenses of wood, copper, photopolymer film and paper
